MSYD-ASRA has made a visit to the Polis Amca Elementary School in Altındağ, Ankara. During the visit, the school principal Ismail Okutan talked about the schooling of the Syrians and exchanged ideas for the solution of the present problems. The initiative that Ismail Okutan, who has been working as a director in the Polis Amca Elementary School for 6 months, has put forth is notewhorthy. From the time he started his duty, Okutan, trying to identify the socio-economical neighborhood of the school he was in, came to realize the Syrian population, under Temporary Protection, living in the neighborhood. In particular, he witnessed many children, who were at the age of school and who could not attend the school, wandering around the streets, and developed some initiatives to remove this situation. He conducted home visits in nearby neighborhoods to ensure that children are enrolled in school and that potential hazards that may be encountered by out-of-school children are eliminated. Through these visits, he reached approximately 300-400 people and had the opportunity to tell the importance of schooling to the families. As a result, up to now, 84 children have been enrolled in the school through Okutan’s efforts. This initiative, which he put forth as a teacher, has intersected with the activities of child protection and schooling that MSYD-ASRA has put forward on the field. In this context, as MSYD-ASRA, we wish that the initiative of Mr. Okutan is increases enduringly and forms an example. At the same time, during the visit, activities have been planned for the realization of awareness raising sessions and trainings, especially on peer bullying and hygiene promotion, as a result of exchanging ideas on the main problems faced by the Syrian children who are already in school.
